" I started my own cycling club in 1938.We were called the Waterlow Wheelers, after Waterlow Park in Highgate,London.
It was made up of my old school friends. We all had our own bikes and were about 18 years old."

Momentum
" You gotta roll with it
You gotta take your time
You gotta say what you say
Don't let anybody get in your way
Cause it's all too much for me to take
You gotta take your time
You gotta say what you say
Don't let anybody get in your way
Cause it's all too much for me to take
Don't ever stand aside
Don't ever be denied
You wanna be who you'd be
If your coming with me "

Rainy days...
"The veil of confusion gently falls away, Like the dank mist on a dull autumn day. Revealing the path that lies there before me, To step forward or not, what will it be?."

Galibier
The French call it ' the Giant of the Alps', a sacred monster, except that sacre can also mean ' unholy'
The Galibier is most often the roof of the Tour first included in 1911.

Getting dirty
My friend Jane Ollerenshaw sent me these photographs she took of me at the Dirty Deeds cross race in Coburg
I use to ride a lot of road but for the past few years my passion has been for the road ....
Cross racing is the best of both worlds and I am loving it !!

Dirty Deeds Rnd.2
"When the green woods laugh with the voice of joy, And the dimpling stream runs laughing by; When the air does laugh with our merry wit, And the green hill laughs with the noise of it."

Mind games....
"When I attack,I try to psychologically destroy my rivals, who never know how far I can go.It's certainly hard to bear the responsibility of blowing the race apart every time, just as it's hard to tackle a mountain when you know the suffering that's around the corner."

Riding with panache
" Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo.You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as crazy ones we see genius.Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do "

...and the road still climbs.
There are 60 of them, riding in close formation as they struggle up the first hill climb.Their weaker brethren gradually drop back. Now there are 40,but the multicoloured thread stretches taunt and any minute now it will snap.Near the front the Champion rides on at a steady pace, led at this stage by one of his team mates, who acts like a pilot fish carving out a path for him, until he takes matters into his own hands once and for all.The others can't match his speed and give up the unequal struggle, dropping back in their turn.
Only 17 left.

Stage 1 Tour de France 1924
This is a little extract of a report of the first stage of the 1924 Tour.
Last night,at half past eleven, the men were still dining in a suburban Parisian restaurant. The scene was carnivalesque: from a distance, dressed in their gaudy jerseys, they could of been taken for Chinese lanterns. They downed their last drinks and rose from their seats to leave, but the crowd lifted them in high triumph, for these cyclists were about to compete in the Tour de France.

The ' Angel of the Mountain '
Charly Gaul of Luxembourg , rides through a snow-flanked corridor high up in the Dolomite mountains.
Through brilliant mountain climbing.Gaul sat very still on his bicycle, rarely moved out of the saddle, and rapidly twirled gears several inches lower than those of his rivals.

Looking forward to the hills...
" Being a mountain specialist is very hard, not that I'd rather be anything else because I don't think you can become... well, let's say a better human being, without effort.
You can beat the problems of life much more easily if you've met hardship."
