Viva La Vuelta !!

At a quarter to eight on the morning of Monday,29th April 1935 the Mayor of Madrid raised his green flag,and the peloton of more than 50 cyclists rode away from the Puerta de Atoche through the streets of the city in front of a cheering crowd of thousands.

Ahead of them lay 3,425 KM that would take them on a clockwise journey around Spain to end back in the capital 17 days later.

It was a bare three months since Juan Pujol,the director of the Madrid daily Informaciones, had announced that his paper would be promoting and organizing the first Vuelta a Espana.
